Why Convert a Shipping Container Into a Garage?

Did you know the word “garage” derives from the French word “garer?” The word means “to park.” According to the latest government statistics, about two-thirds of all U.S. households have a garage or carport. A garage is great for parking and protecting your cars. For many people, a garage is also a great storage area, work area, and even a play area in bad weather.

If you don’t have the luxury of a garage, but an addition seems too expensive, consider a shipping container converted into a garage. Shipping containers will usually be more versatile and less expensive than a traditional addition.

Discover the advantages of converting your shipping container into a garage here.

Shipping Containers Are Secure

A car is a big investment and it’s nice to keep it secure. Parking on the street leaves your car available for thieves and vandals. Shipping containers are usually more secure than most garages because of the way they are constructed. A shipping container resists corrosion and is a big, metal box. When you add a sturdy lock to it, its almost impossible to break into.

On top of being a safe place for your car, it’s also a safe place for expensive equipment such as art, woodworking or yard equipment. Store them safely in a shipping container garage.

Custom Modifications

Another great thing about shipping containers is that they’re customizable. You can add in shelves, drywall, or any type of interior you want.

You only have to make sure you’ve got the interior insulated. Shipping containers are watertight and windproof but they do need insulation to make them comfortable. If you want windows, you can add those too.

There are many ways to build a garage from shipping containers. If you have a small area and don’t need a lot of storage, you can opt for one container. Converting a shipping container to a one-car garage is should be relatively simple.

Modular

Need something bigger? Shipping containers are modular units. You can place two containers parallel to each other leaving the amount of room you want for storage in the middle. Then add a roof and you’ve got two big, secure storage areas with a carport in between.

Easy Maintenance and Eco-Conscious

Shipping containers offer easy maintenance. Once your shipping container garage is set up, there isn’t a lot of upkeep worries. Sweep it out now and then and you’re good to go! Shipping containers are sustainable for architecture because they’re recycled or upcycled. By using a shipping container, you’re keeping it out of the landfill.

They also don’t use concrete or cement which is toxic to the environment. You can opt for a steel pipe foundation or a wooden beam foundation which are better for the environment than a concrete slab.

Opt for a Secure, Eco-Conscious Shipping Container Garage

As you can see a shipping container garage is safe, secure, budget friendly and completely customizable. They’re also a great eco-conscious option. So, are you ready for an affordable solution to a new garage addition? Contact Equipment Management Services in the Houston and Dallas, Texas areas today.

The Pros and Cons of Owning a Shipping Container Tiny Home in Houston

There are currently more than 10,000 tiny homes in the US, most of which are being utilized as live-in residences.

One increasingly popular method of building these homes is by using shipping containers. They’re easy to customize inside and durable on the outside. A shipping container tiny home is an excellent option for anyone considering the ‘minimalist lifestyle’.

However, scaling down your belongings to that size isn’t for the faint of heart. Sure, minimalism and the freedom of tiny living can be a huge advantage—but some things prove to be a bit more challenging. So, if you are steering in that direction, we wrote this guide for you. Here are the pros and cons of owning this type of dwelling in an area like Houston, Texas.

Pros

One of the top pros of a shipping container tiny home is the price.

In 2019, the average new home cost was fairly hefty—coming out to an astounding $329,750. If you think buying used must be cheaper, the truth is, it’s not by much. The average previously-owned home for sale came to about $245,000.

On the other hand, a full tiny home build-out typically costs about $60,000, on average. That’s not a small difference! Additionally, almost 70% of tiny homeowners don’t have a mortgage.

This cost difference makes owning a home more realistic for people with smaller budgets.

Another fantastic benefit is the reduction of your carbon footprint. After all, with such a small space to maintain, your your energy emissions will be significantly downsized. If you consider buying a used container to build your tiny home, you could quite easily reduce your financial footprint that much more.

Tiny homes are an excellent way to practice minimalism. They force you to take a hard look at your belongings—what do you need? What is weighing you down?—and boil them down to the necessities. Many individuals find a lot of freedom in this process.

Cons

One con that many tiny homeowners cite is storage and space.

Tiny home living is certainly not ideal for packrats. If you find yourself hanging on to every souvenir, ticket stub, and your massive t-shirt collection from high school, you may find the space a bit messy and cluttered. It takes some ingenuity to make the container work in an organized, efficient way.

Additionally, traveling with your tiny home may not be as accessible or affordable as one might think. To do so, you’d need a vehicle that can tow—one of your own, or one you’ve rented—and gasoline goes much quicker, causing you to fill up more often than you might expect.

Is a Shipping Container Tiny Home Right for You?

The good news? These cons aren’t exactly dealbreakers. If you’re prepared to deal with the admittedly complicated parts of living in a container tiny home, you’ll reap the benefits, too.

Life’s all about balance, right? With the tiny home mindset on your side, you’ll be able to view any cons as ways to overcome challenges and make it better.

Choose a Quality Conex Box for Sale from a Container Yard in Houston

Conex Box for Sale in Houston: 5 Facts to Know About Conex Boxes

The port of Houston is the busiest shipping port on the Gulf Coast. It manages more than 69% of all the shipping container cargo in the Gulf Region.

Despite the high shipping volume, some of these freight containers are only used once or twice before they’re sold.

If you’re looking for a Conex box for sale in Houston, that’s great news. It means you have a lot of options available, thanks to Houston’s proximity to shipping ports in this region.

Keep reading to learn five interesting facts about Conex boxes before you make your purchase.

1. Conex Boxes Have Many Different Names

Conex boxes have been around since the 1950s. There was a need for a standardized method of shipping large quantities of goods and the standard, 20-foot shipping container was born. This method was called Container Express and later shortened to Conex

They also go by other names like bulk shipping containers, sea cans, or storage containers. ISO containers, named for the International Standards Organization, is also another common name.

When you’re shopping around, know that these terms all refer to the same type of structure.

2. Bulk Shipping Containers Are Easily Customizable

You can turn a freight container into a portable office, a pop-up restaurant, or an emergency shelter. Some companies that sell Conex boxes even offer shipping container modification services to meet all your conex box needs.

You can add doors and windows, change the flooring, wire it for electricity, and much more. You can even combine multiple containers to get more space to build a specific structure.

3. Conex Boxes Last for at Least 15 Years

Conex boxes are designed to withstand harsh sea air and the wear and tear of travel. That’s why you can expect them to last for up to 15 or 20 years!

Thanks to their steel exterior, they’re extremely durable. But, that also makes them vulnerable to rust. With regular container maintenance, you can prevent water leaks that may lead to rust or wood rot.

Just like any other structure, you can extend the life of your Conex box with careful maintenance.

4. Shipping Containers Have Unlimited Uses

Shipping container restaurants, housing, and offices have become very popular. But, these creative structures only scratch the surface of what’s possible.

A shipping container can act as a shed for your lawn tools or a garage for your vehicle. You can convert a shipping container into a guest house in your backyard.

You could even use a freight container to make an indoor garden, a creative studio, an underground bunker, or a swimming pool.

5. You Can Choose New or Used Shipping Containers for Sale

Nearly 3 million shipping containers came into the port of Houston in 2019, which is an 11% increase from the previous year. That means you’ll have even more containers to choose from.

There are new shipping containers for sale , which are brand new and have never hauled cargo. You can also choose from used shipping containers that have been used only once or twice. Used containers must pass the EMS inspection before they’re available for sale.

What Are the Different Types of Container Sizes?

The modern shipping container has been around since 1955. Malcolm P. McLean’s company started using the same truck trailers to move goods on both the highway and the sea.

While the concept hasn’t changed much since then, the design options of the containers have changed. Now, you can find shipping containers in an array of sizes and designs.

The trouble is, there are so many configurations that it’s tough to know which one is right for your needs. Read on to learn about your options for container sizes as well as the different types of containers.

Common Shipping Container Sizes

The majority of shipping containers are 8 feet wide, so the height and length is what really separates them.

The standard height for containers is 8.5 feet. But, high cube containers, which are 9.5 feet tall, are also considered standard.

The most common lengths for shipping containers are 20 and 40 feet long, so these are considered standard sizes. In fact, cargo ships are measured in TEUs, or twenty-foot equivalent units. The 20-foot container is so common it’s considered the base unit of measurement.

You can also get containers in different lengths like 8, 10, 30, 48, and 53 feet. You can also get modified containers built to your specific dimensions, so the possibilities are endless.

If you plan to use your container for highway transportation, you need to check the laws for your region before you buy a shipping container

There’s actually no federal length limit for truck tractor semi trailers, but there is a minimum length requirement. The minimum length requirement is different in every state, and ranges from 48 to 59 feet.

Types of Shipping Containers

Standard dry containers are the most common type since they can handle most goods and cargo.

Insulated and refrigerated containers have insulation in their walls which is why they’re great for produce, dairy, or meat. These two types of containers are both insulated except refrigerated units have a condenser that lets you control the temperature.

High cubes are great for lightweight cargo because you can store more without adding any length. They’re also great for home or office conversions since there’s more head room for insulation or lighting.

Tunnel and side open containers have different door placements for easier access to the cargo. Tunnel containers have doors at both ends and side open containers have doors on the long side of the trailer.

Open top containers don’t have a metal top, but you can cover them with a tarp. If you need to store or transport tall items, open top containers can help.

What Texans Need to Know Before Buying New or Used Storage Containers

Are you looking to buy a storage container for your business? You might be hoping to add a storage container or two to your business operations for extra storage outside of your normal facilities.

This is a smart way to add storage areas without building a new facility. Wondering if you need to buy a new storage container? Or can you get away with buying a used one to save money?

Purchasing a used unit is economical. But what should you consider when thinking about buying used storage containers

Read on to learn about the considerations you should look at when purchasing a storage container in Texas.

Potential Damage

When you purchase a new unit, you should expect there to be no damage. That’s one of the advantages of a new unit.

However, if you are considering a used unit, study the outside of the unit carefully. Look for damage. There’s a difference between real damage and superficial scrapes and dents. A used unit is bound to have some scrapes and dents. Any unit on a job site will acquire them. As long as those don’t take away from the structural security of the unit, you will be fine.

Look at the Doors

Look closely at the doors to the unit. The security of the storage container should be important to you. You want the unit to seal properly so it can work as storage and remain water safe.

On a shipping container, there’s something called a door gasket. The door gasket is usually a rubber seal. It’s what seals the container walls and the container door. The door gasket needs to be in good condition so the door will seal effectively and prevent water from entering the container.

Look also at the rivets that hold the door gaskets in place. If they look worn or rusted, that could also be a sign they won’t last much longer.

You want to ensure the doors don’t show too many signs of wear or rust.

Interior Flooring

Interior flooring can give you clues about the condition of the unit. On the interior, the floor should feel secure. If it appears warped or damaged, this may be a sign of moisture coming into the storage container. Likewise, a spongy floor is probably showing some signs of rot and should be passed by.

Outside of the unit, there are steel cross members. These should be in sound condition. It allows the used storage container to be lifted with a forklift and moved as needed.

Roof

New container units are not likely to have any potential weaknesses with the roofing that a used unit might have. The condition of the container roof is key to preventing water from seeping into the unit. The older the unit, the more concerned you should be about the roof.

Look for large patterns of rust or tiny pinhole openings in the steel that could allow water to get inside.

Texas Used Storage Containers

Storage containers are a smart choice for any business that needs some extra space at the office or on a job site. Used storage containers can be a great option. They can meet all your container needs and still be an economical choice.

What You Need to Know Before Buying a Conex Box for Sale in Houston

You’ve seen a Conex box for sale in Houston, and now your interest has piqued.

Maybe you need one of these metal shipping containers to store or ship items across a great distance. Or, perhaps you’re interested in converting one into a home or office, per the newest trends.

Either way, you’ve found one that fits the bill, or so you think.

Before you sign on the dotted line, read on. Today, we’re sharing the top things to know before you make a commitment.

Ready to learn more? Let’s get started!

What Is the Size?

First, you need to know the exact dimensions of a Conex box.

Most containers are either 20 feet long or 40 feet long, eight feet wide and either eight or 8.5 feet high. Yet, there are a few specialty sizes also available. In addition, you can also find fully customized and modified shipping containers for sale.

You don’t want to agree to a purchase expecting your box to be one size only to be surprised later when it’s time to buy.

How Much Does It Weigh?

Next, consider the weight of the Conex box in question.

A 20-foot container will weigh about 5,000 pounds. It can hold around 27 tons. On the other hand, a 40-foot container will weigh around 8,000 pounds and hold around 30 tons.

Depending on the way you plan to use your container, those 3,000 pounds can make a world of difference.

What’s the Condition?

Many used Conex boxes are still in great shape, but you should know what you’re getting. There are four main ways to categorize the condition of a container. From highest to lowest-quality, you can find:

  • New shipping containers for sale
  • Certified containers
  • Wind and watertight containers
  • As-is containers

You can learn more about the differences between these types here.

Talk to the Houston seller to understand where the container has been. When you find used shipping containers for sale, ask if there are any physical defects or issues that could interfere with operability and function. Take the time to inspect the boxes thoroughly for any signs of dents, holes or other types of damage.

While you’re at it, make sure the doors open and close properly, and inquire about the seal. Regardless of how many trips they make, you want conex boxes that are sturdy and reliable.

How Long Will It Last?

It goes without saying that a Conex box isn’t a small investment. Therefore, you want to make sure you’ll see a solid ROI!

Most containers of this kind have a lifespan of about 10 to 12 years or more. This timeline can vary depending on a variety of factors, including:

  • Climate
  • Environment
  • Type of use
  • Frequency of relocation

Especially if you’re buying an as-is Conex box, be sure to ask how long it’s expected to last and use that information to weigh your buying decision. This is especially important if you plan to make any modifications to your box.

Before you research shipping container modification services and budget around that expense, you want to make sure that your box will last longer than a few years!

Where to Buy Bulk Shipping Containers and the Benefits of Buying Bulk

The shipping industry is BIG business. A whopping 1.8 billion tons of goods were shipped and transported by shipping containers in 2017 alone.

To get the best deal on your containers, you should probably consider buying shipping containers in bulk. But, where do you buy them? And will you really be saving that much more money.

Here we tell you all the benefits of buying in bulk and where to get your bulk containers.

You’ll Spend Less Money

This is always the biggest benefit of buying in bulk. Because you will be transacting a substantial order, you will have more leverage to negotiate with the supplier.

If you’re going to be a repeat customer of these bulk orders in the future, let the supplier know. This will give them even more of an incentive to strike a better deal with you, so they retain you as a long term client.

Owning Your Own Containers Means You Can Make Money on the Leftover Space

Buying in bulk means you have more containers to fill up and more profits to rake in. So, you own many containers and the goods you’re shipping don’t fill up all the bulk containers you own. You can perhaps rent them as container storage space to other people. Still making money on the original bulk shipping container purchase.

Reduced Costs for Shipping

You’ll always get a better deal if you’re shipping a bunch of containers at once than if you’re only shipping one. Why? Because the transport costs the same in gas and labor regardless of the number of containers on the vessel. By shipping as many containers as you can at once you’re only paying for that premium once.

Get More Bang For Your Buck, Buying in Bulk Can Get You the Bigger Boxes

When you spring for a bulk order there are times you’ll be upgraded to the bigger containers for free. Remember the leverage we were talking about? When you buy in bulk you’re holding the cards.

Ask the seller if they’re willing to make a few of the containers 40 feet instead of 20 feet and they’ll usually let you do it at the same price. You might even be able to get your new containers at used prices by buying in bulk.

Buy Your Bulk Shipping Containers From the Best

So now that you know all the benefits of buying bulk shipping containers you need to know where to buy them. Well, you’re in luck.

Tricks of the Trade: How to Buy Shipping Containers for Sale in Houston

If you want to build a minimalist home or expand your business, you may be looking for shipping containers for sale in Houston.

Whatever your reason for needing a shipping container, it’s easier than you think to buy one. We put together this simple guide to show you how you can purchase one for yourself or your business.

Keep reading to learn more about the steps you need to take before purchasing one or more shipping containers in Texas.

1. Know What You Need

The first thing you need to do is decide what you need in a shipping container. This will be determined by what you’re planning on using your container for.

If you’re using it for shipping goods, for example, you’ll need a different container compared to someone planning on using it as a backyard storage solution.

There are two main considerations to be made:

Size

There are several sizes of shipping containers available. Let’s take a quick look at the most common options you can choose from.

  • 40′ L x 8′ W x 8′ H
  • 20′ L x 8′ W x 8′ H
  • 40′ L x 8′ W x 8.5′ H

Whereas nearly all shipping containers are eight feet wide, you can find lengths of 8′, 10′, 24′, 30′, 45′, 48′, and 53′. However, these make up a fraction of the containers available.

Grade

Once you know how big you need your shipping container, it’s time to decide on what condition you need it in. Shipping containers come in four grades so you can pick the right one for your purpose.

New

Also known as one-trippers, these are containers that are made in a factory (typically overseas) and sent directly to your nearest port. These are ideal for businesses looking to ship products around the world as they will last the longest compared to other grades.

Certified

If you’re looking to save some money while buying for your business, consider getting certified or cargo-worthy containers. These are used shipping containers that can still be used in overseas shipping lines. However, because these won’t last quite as long as a new container, you may find yourself replacing them sooner than you’d like.

Wind and Water Tight

Once a shipping container is no longer able to be used for overseas shipping, it becomes listed as wind and watertight. That means they don’t have any large holes in the sides but often have some rust and dents from years of use. Many people looking to use shipping containers to build storage or living spaces choose this grade because they’re less expensive but still provide excellent protection against the weather.

As-Is

The lowest grade of shipping containers is those that have obvious problems that prevent them from being completely waterproof. They may have extensive rust, holes in the metal, or doors that don’t seal properly. For some people, this isn’t a problem when they’re being used as a storage shed or for those that have the tools and skills to fix any problems they run into.

2. Find Shipping Containers for Sale in Houston

Once you know what you’re looking for in a shipping container, it’s easy to find a company that will provide one for you. We offer shipping containers for sale and can also help with modifications if you’re going to use it for anything but shipping. That way, it’ll start serving its purpose as soon as it arrives on your property.

3. Prepare Your Site

Once you’ve done all of that, you’ll want to make sure your site is ready. This is particularly important if your container is going to be a permanent structure somewhere so you don’t have to worry about moving it later. The largest sizes of containers can only be moved with an industrial crane whereas smaller containers can be moved with a heavy-duty forklift.

Determine Location

First, you need to know exactly where you want your container to go. The area should be level and larger than the size of the container so the shipping company can maneuver it into place. You’ll also want to make sure the truck can safely and easily get to the location you want your container. It would be a shame for your container to arrive only to find out it can’t be immediately placed where you want it.

Know Where You Want the Doors

Make sure you also think about where the doors should face. Shipping containers have one set of large doors that are only at one end. Most often, the containers are loaded so that these doors are facing the front of the truck.

Keep this in mind as you prepare your site so you can determine how the truck will get your container to the site. In some cases, you can request the container to be loaded in the opposite direction to easily get it where you want it. If you’re not planning on using the shipping container’s doors for anything and will be modifying it with your own doors, you may not need to worry about this aspect of preparation.

Maintain Airflow

If your shipping container is going to be sitting for any length of time, you need to make sure it has airflow to the bottom of the container. Otherwise, the floor may rust out over time because of moisture. This can be as easy as placing cement or wooden blocks where the container is going to be set. You can also get special casters that attach to the bottom of your container.

4. Arrange for Delivery

The final step once your site is ready is to make arrangements for delivery. The size of the container and future location for it may determine which option you use.

Flatbed and tilt trailers can be used for any size shipping container. However, if you need a larger container manipulated into place and don’t have equipment on hand, you’ll want a truck with a crane.

Conex Box Buying Guide: 7 Factors to Consider before Purchase

For the uninitiated, what is a Conex box? It is a shipping industry term for a standard metal shipping container that provides mass storage and transport of goods across the world.

A Conex box seems like an easy sell if you need to ship or store things over long distances. However, these boxes are not just for transportation and storage. They have a lot of surprising uses outside of their main design.

The Variety of Uses for a Conex Box

There has been a trend that has been building for a while. This trend burst into popularity over the last few years. What is this trend? Using shipping containers as makeshift or permanent buildings.

It may seem like an odd idea, but it has a good deal of benefits. Shipping containers are far cheaper than many mobile homes or offices on the market. They are also designed to be very strong and airtight. So, adding heating and cooling options to a custom shipping container home or office is possible. There can be many more types of modifications that can be made to these Conex boxes, like everything from windows to indoor plumbing.

Here are just a few factors you should consider before you purchasing a Conex box for your storage or living space…

The 7 Important Factors to Look For

It is always a good idea to do some research before any major purchase. Conex boxes can go for a few thousand dollars, so buying them without thought can cost you later. Once you have reviewed these 7 factors, though, you should be ready to make a more informed purchase decision.

1. Sealed and Sturdy

Conex box’s main purpose is to prevent damage of products that are being moved great distances. Therefore, they can withstand all kinds of weather in-order to protect their content from harm. In the process however, they tend to get fairly banged up. If you are saving some money by buying a used Conex box, it is important to inspect the Conex box first for any dents and damages. However, if you are buying a new Conex box, this should not be a problem.

The key factors to check when it comes to wear and tear are damage to the overall structure, the container’s ability to seal, and whether the doors open and close without a problem. If all of these things are fine, then you should be in good shape.

2. Cleanliness

During its lifetime, a Conex box will contain a wide variety of objects and products, often for days to weeks at a time. During this time, the vast majority of places will clean their shipping containers between uses. Sometimes however, the smell will build up. If there is a nasty or odd smell in the Conex box during inspection, ask the distributor when it was last cleaned before considering that box for purchase.

A Conex box can be easy to clean, but it requires a bit of diligence. Failing to keep a conex box clean can lead to dangerous internal growths that can be hazardous to ones health.

Obviously, a new Conex box for sale should have no cleanliness issues, although checking it out first will not do any harm.

3. Moveable

When purchasing a Conex box, you must be able to get it to where you need it.

If you do have a big business and a means to transport it, this problem is an easy fix. If not, you need to look for moving services that deal with Conex boxes.

For those in the Houston area, we here at Equipment Management Services do offer easy transport. For those outside of Texas, we do still provide shipping at an appropriate price.

4. The Right Size for Your Needs

Conex boxes can come in many different sizes. Figuring out which size will fit your need is an easy thing to overlook. The common size for Conex boxes are 20 feet long and 40 feet long. Also, they can come in custom sizes depending on your needs.

5. Locking Mechanisms

With everything stored and locked away, you want to know that everything is secure. Some Conex boxes come with a locking mechanism built into the doors. Most of them do not.

When determining the cost and need for a Conex box, always factor in the addition of a lock if needed. What kind of lock you set up will depend on your budget and need for security.

6. Whether to Rent or to Buy

Sometimes if your need for a Conex box is very short term, you may want to rent a unit instead of buying one. However, if your need for a storage container goes beyond 3 years or so, it would be best to buy the Conex box.

Obviously, if you intend to make modifications to the Conex box, renting would be a bad idea. There are places that do rent already modified boxes, so if you can find one that suits your needs, you can save some money by renting.

7. Modifications

If you are looking to modify your Conex box, you will need to first understand what those modifications will be and then plan ahead. Budget them out first and do your research on how to make these modifications with the least amount of labor and cost.
